This article explains how to define the risk assessment scope by selecting which structures, areas, systems, and assets to include. It is intended for inspectors who carry out risk assessments in BriqSafe.
NoteRequired role: Inspector
Defining the Risk Assessment Scope
Selecting the scope sets the exact parts of a location your risk assessment will cover. This includes structures, areas, systems, and assets.
- Open the risk assessment and go to its overview.
- Locate the Select scope card and click the Scope for analysis field, which shows how many items are selected.
- In the Change scope picker that opens, expand the tree to see structures, areas, systems, and assets.
- Tick the boxes for the items you want to include. Selecting a parent item automatically selects all its children.
- Review the selected-item count shown at the top.
- Click the Confirm button in the header to save the scope.
Important notes when setting scope:
- If you reduce the scope after collecting data, the data for removed items is not deleted but marked as out of scope. These items will no longer count towards the completeness of the assessment.
- You cannot include more than 500 assets in a single scope; if you exceed this limit, you will see a message asking you to reduce the selection.
- The Confirm button remains disabled while scope data is still loading, so you cannot save until loading completes fully.
Scope Restrictions
Some items may be unavailable with a greyed-out checkbox when selecting scope. This happens for two reasons:
1. Items covered by another active risk assessment
- In the scope picker, greyed-out items are already included in another active risk assessment.
- These items cannot be selected until the other assessment is finished or the items are removed from that assessment's scope.
Note that multiple active risk assessments can exist for a location, but their scopes cannot overlap.
2. Single Control Regime Rule
- The first item you tick sets the control regime for the entire risk assessment.
- Items belonging to a different control regime appear greyed out and cannot be selected. The note explains: "A risk assessment must cover items from a single control regime. Items in a different regime can't be added to this selection."
- To assess items under another control regime, create a separate risk assessment for them.
If items are incorrectly greyed out due to the regime lock, clear your selection and start by selecting an item from the correct regime.
Related Considerations
Before selecting the scope, ensure that structures, areas, systems, and assets are properly configured in the location:
- Structures define the buildings in a location and must exist before adding areas or systems.
- Areas (such as rooms) are added within structures and inherit their structure’s control regime and facility type.
- Systems are created under a structure and represent building services like water systems.
- Assets are added under structures or areas and linked to the relevant systems to generate the correct compliance activities.
All these elements contribute to the scope selection and the proper generation of compliance activities and risk assessments.
