Build out the floor plan

This article explains how to build out the floor plan in BriqSafe by adding rooms or floors within a structure. It is intended for engineers and inspectors responsible for configuring buildings and ensuring the floor plan matches the physical layout.

Adding Areas Within a Structure

Build the floor plan room by room so it matches the physical building during initial location setup or when discovering new rooms.

  1. Open the structure where you want to add areas.
  2. Use the visual floor plan editor for a chosen floor to draw rooms, or add areas from the Structures view.
  3. Enter a Name and select an Area Type for each room.
  4. Set the Floor Level to match the room’s position in the building.
  5. Each area inherits its Facility Type and control regime from the parent structure.

Note: The area does not derive its own control regime from the area type because the mapping was removed. To adjust compliance requirements for any room, update the structure’s facility type instead.

Adding Floors and Reordering Them

Define the floors of a structure and arrange them to reflect their real-world order.

  1. Open the structure's Floors list.
  2. Choose Reorder to enter reorder mode.
  3. Drag floors into the correct top-to-bottom sequence.
  4. Drop the floors to save their new order and update each floor’s level based on position.
  5. Select Done to exit reorder mode.

Important: Reordering rewrites floor levels completely, overwriting any manual settings. Make sure you have structure-edit permission to perform this action.

Generating a Floor Plan Using AI Floor Scan

Quickly populate rooms by converting a photo of a floor plan drawing into digital rooms using the mobile app.

  1. In the mobile floor plan editor, open the AI Scan or Create with AI option on an empty floor.
  2. Choose or take a photo of the floor plan drawing and submit it.
  3. Wait as the scanner detects rooms and extracts their coordinates while processing runs in the background.
  4. Review the detected rooms and apply them to create areas on the floor.

Note: The scan only detects rooms; it does not create assets. If the floor already contains rooms, running the scan replaces them and may disrupt asset assignments. Prefer to scan on empty floors or reassign assets first. This feature requires the ai-features entitlement.

Managing Area Occupancy Status

Mark rooms as vacant or in use so that compliance activities are accurately calculated.

  1. Select the area to update.
  2. Change its Occupancy status between In Use and Vacant.

Changing occupancy triggers recalculation of compliance activities. Note that only these two values exist; no 'under renovation' or other states are available. Marking an area as Vacant pauses its compliance activities, so remember to reset it to In Use when reoccupied to avoid compliance gaps.

Adding Structures to a Location

Structures screen in the Residencial Serrano location allows managing building structures, with key actions including adding a new structure and editing or viewing details of existing ones via a dropdown menu.

Before adding areas, define the buildings (structures) that compose a location.

  1. Open the location and go to its Structures tab.
  2. Click Add Structure.
  3. Enter the structure’s Name, select a Structure Type (e.g., Building, Warehouse), and assign a Facility Type (e.g., Hotel, Office, School).
  4. Optionally enter Code, Construction Year, and Description.
  5. The rules engine assigns a control regime automatically based on the structure and location jurisdiction, unless you manually select one.
  6. Submit to create the structure.

Reminder: The facility type determines the control regime and subsequent compliance activities. Make sure to assign the correct facility type. A location must have at least one structure before areas can be added.

Browsing and Managing Structures and Floors

Navigate your location’s building hierarchy and manage floors, rooms, and equipment.

  1. Open the location and select the Structures tab.
  2. Switch between Cards, Hierarchy, and Assets view modes.
  3. Click a floor to open the visual floor plan editor for detailed room management.
  4. From a structure’s card actions menu, access Floors, Systems, Control schema, Timeline, and View Responsibilities.

Note: Asset browsing is under the Assets view mode of the Structures tab, not a separate tab. Systems are managed per structure rather than at location level.

Adding Areas and Assets On-Site

Register newly discovered rooms or equipment during site visits.

  1. In the mobile app, add a new area to record a discovered room; it inherits the control regime from its parent structure and saves permanently.
  2. Add assets within the area by providing the asset type, parameters, and linking to the appropriate system.
  3. The rule engine generates control schema activities for added assets automatically.
  4. Changes sync to the web app for review.

Important: On-site additions are permanent, not drafts. Assets added by an inspector auto-approve, while those added by engineers remain pending approval.
